Guest talk: Prof. Dr. Karl Wörle on civil society organizations as catalysts for a just transition

On September 24, 2025, we welcome Prof. Dr. Karl Wörle as a guest at the GO-Chains Network. In his guest lecture, he will highlight the role of civil society organizations as catalysts for just change.

Environmental harm and human rights abusesoften go unchecked in global value chains. The EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) is an ambitious attempt to close this governance gap. The Directive is currently being examined within the international and interdisciplinary research project “Fostering international civil society cooperation: the EU CS3D as a new entry point for a just transition”, at the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna, funded by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund. In his guest lecture, Karl Wörle provides insights into the ongoing research, focusing on the role of civil society organizations and Global North–South cooperation. He will analyze the role of these “governance actors” under the CS3D from legal, economic, and political science perspectives.

Prof. (FH) Dr. Karl Wörle is a Professor of Law at the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna and admitted to the Austrian Bar. His academic work focuses on corporate law, procedural law, and EU law, with a strong emphasis on comparative and interdisciplinary approaches. He studied law at the University of Innsbruck and the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), and began his academic career as a pre-doctoral assistant. He has received several awards for his academic work and brings eight years of hands-on legal experience from leading Austrian law firms.

The guest lecture will take place online on September 24, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

We look forward to this interesting event and many exciting insights from Prof. Dr. Karl Wörle.
