What motivates your research on sustainability in global value chains?

Impact research motivates me, especially related to the European capital market in view of the current EU Green Deal Project and the related regulations on sustainable supply chain (reporting), such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

Which key challenges or opportunities do you see in making value chains more sustainable?

The current controversial discussions on the EU “Omnibus package” stress the key challenges for firms to include proper sustainable supply chain management tools, such as sustainable risk and compliance management systems along their value chains. Unfortunately, we note a rather one-sided and narrow view on the implementation costs and the demand for reducing bureaucracy. However, successful sustainable supply chain management leads to increased corporate resilience, stakeholder reputation, and finally financial and sustainable profits.

How does your current work contribute to sustainability governance in global value chains?

My research mainly deals with empirical analyses on firm-related determinants and consequences of sustainability reporting and performance. Sustainable supply chain reporting represents a major component of ESG reports. Among others, my studies address the impact of corporate governance (e.g., board attributes) on the quality of supply chain reporting and the financial consequences of a high quality of these reports.

What excites you most about being part of this research network?

I like the interdisciplinary approach of the research network and the combination of international research in different disciplines and references to local firms. We increase the connectivity between business and practice with our research network to push the quality of sustainable supply chain management.
